I have never blogged before, and until a few days ago, it never crossed my mind. Over the past few months, I’ve become a regular reader of a few blogs. Somewhere along the way, I decided that I like this genre of communication. The blogs I really enjoy tend to chronicle regular people following their passion in life. They’re doing what they enjoy and sharing it with the world. At first, reading my chosen blogs was a nice little break each day. I wonder what Jessica is wearing today. What new insight has Melissa’s pregnancy sparked lately? As I got to know them tiny bit by bit, I developed an admiration for these bloggers— they are following their bliss, sharing a part of their lives with all of us internet people, and are caring/witty/cool people to boot! In small but important ways, I have changed the way I approach life and the world because I’ve been inspired by a few bloggers!
Last week, a good friend of ours was in town for a visit. As we showed her some of the projects we’ve been working on lately, she seemed genuinely fascinated by our stories and the products of our amateur efforts. We’ve gotten the same reaction from a lot of our friends, family, and coworkers. The DIYers exchange tips. The non-DIYers think we are crazy. It struck me that maybe other people would be interested too.
I also thought about how much we’ve learned about all kinds of random stuff, and how some of that might benefit other DIYers if we put it out there. We’ve learned a ton from other people, so it seems only fair that we should share our experiences and pass it along. We’re pretty much amateurs at everything DIY; our education and training is in other things and we have day jobs. We love to make things and learn to do things ourselves. Sometimes we spend nights and weekends working our hearts out, and other times we enjoy a lazy night of TV. Our attempts yield varying degrees of success, from total re-do to better than imagined. I hope you enjoy our stories! Please let us know what you think.
